Steve Nering, the artist behind NERIQUEA
The Artist

From soldier to self-taught artist in copper.

I'm Steve Nering. With no artistic training, I taught myself the art of copper patina over the years — and developed my own language from it.

I'm Steve, a former soldier and non-commissioned officer with operational experience in Afghanistan. As a mechanical engineering technician, I've gained varied perspectives through different roles in engineering, organisational development and process management. Today I work in the public sector.

My art consists of abstract wall pieces that I create from patinated copper. I use only techniques and substances that react with the copper and produce patina. With no artistic training, I taught myself the processes over the years, experimentally, and refined them into a craft.

Change, and how we deal with it, is a central theme of my work. I often see great fear of and resistance to change. It is ever-present, whether we want it or not. Instead of clinging to the old, the task is to shift our perspective and actively shape what happens along the way. Through dialogue with our surroundings and a willingness to adapt, opportunities open up to shape the future actively.

"Embrace change, don't be afraid, look closely — then you'll see what's coming."

The patina of my works matures over weeks to months. By interacting with the natural oxidation of the copper, I can create unique pictures. Each work is a kind of therapy for me — about slowing down and accepting the unknown. It's about letting things happen and not trying to control everything. In the end there's a result that often began as barely a hint of an idea.

My works reflect the experiences and emotions of my life — from a sense of departure and will to exhaustion and fear. The movement in my pictures stands for uncertainties and inner conflict on the path of change. The strong, earthy colours and structures convey courage and strength, but also calm and harmony.

Change brings obstacles, but those who look can find ways to overcome them. Success won't always be clear, yet the dialogue with the future and active engagement create possibilities.
